Canine Eye and Ear Care: Spot Infection Before It Starts

As dog parents, I think it is safe to say that we all want the best for our furry family. An integral part of maintaining the health and wellness of your pooch is always keeping an eye on their eyes (and ears). An important way to stay on top of this is to know the warning signs of infection.

SIGNS OF AN EYE INFECTION CAN INCLUDE:

  • Squinting or holding the eyelid shut

  • Tearing

  • Scratching at the eye

  • Redness

  • Cloudiness

  • Vision loss (bumping into things, not focusing)

  • A distended third eyelid

  • Crusty discharge.

Here at Scenthound we keep a close eye on the eyes as a first step to catching any small issues before they become big problems. Regularly cleaning the eyes can also help your pet avoid infections, relieve allergies, and contribute to their overall health.

SIGNS OF AN EAR INFECTION CAN INCLUDE:

  • Head shaking/tilting

  • Scratching at the ear

  • Rubbing head on the floor

  • Redness or swelling

  • Discharge

  • Foul odor

Did you know that ear infections are one of the most common causes for vet visits? Cleaning and caring for your pet's ears are important ways to reduce the chance for ear infections and excess wax build up. Here at Scenthound, we practice routine cleaning as a good way to detect potential infections early.
