Resolve To Be a Better Pup Parent

New Year’s Resolutions aren’t just for people. The start of a new year can signal a fresh start for you and your pup! Here are ten resolutions to make 2020 your pup’s happiest and healthiest year yet.

  1. Groom Your Dog Regularly

Routine grooming is critical to the overall wellness of every dog. Regular bathing and brushing keeps your dog’s skin and coat clean and healthy. Not to mention ear cleaning and nail clipping, which are both essential in maintaining health and comfort. Daily brushing removes dead skin cells and excess hair and helps stimulate natural oils which are healthy for the coat. For longer coats, brushing prevents matting which is extremely painful and can lead to odor and skin issues. Once matting gets severe, a shave-down is required to remedy the situation. Keep your furry family smelling fresh and snuggle-ready!

  2. Practice Good Oral Hygiene Habits with Your Dog

Brushing teeth daily is the best way to keep tartar and plaque at bay — be sure to use a toothpaste meant for dogs. Water additives and treats designed to reduce tartar can also be a helpful tool in keeping teeth clean. Even with all of these tricks, non-aesthetic cleanings are a great preventive measure to keep those pearly whites in good shape and it’s always important to consult your veterinarian to find out when a full dental cleaning may be necessary.

  3. Measure Your Pup’s Food Every Time!

Did you know over 50% of pets in the U.S. are classified as overweight? There’s no better time for owners to commit to a new diet and exercise regimen than the start of the new year. Many owners “eyeball” their pet’s daily intake and pour that into a bowl, often resulting in overfeeding and weight gain. It’s important to measure out their meals every time using a measuring cup to ensure your pet isn’t taking in more calories than they need. The recommended feeding guidelines on the bag are good place to start to figure out how much your little one really needs.

  4. Choose an Age-Appropriate Diet

Growing pets have specific nutrient requirements to ensure their bodies grow healthy and strong. For example, some senior pets may have lower energy requirements, but have other medical issues like degenerative joint disease that may be helped with the appropriate diet. Choosing a diet specifically tailored to your pet’s life stage is an important factor in keeping them in optimal health.

  5. Incorporate (More) Exercise into Your Routine

Walking or jogging with your dog is a great way to exercise both of your bodies and strengthen your bond. This resolution is a win-win because you get all the benefits, too! Stay fit right along with your pup by taking more and longer walks together.

  6. Try a New Activity with Your Dog

From doga (dog yoga) to hiking, it’s easier than ever for people to have fun incorporating their pet into a new exercise routine. It’s a great way to bond and get out of the house together. Dog-friendly events and breed-specific meet-up groups are another fun way to find like-minded pet owners to socialize with. We list some of the fun events going on our area on our Facebook page — be sure to check it out!

  7. Make a Date with Your Vet

Yearly examinations by the veterinarian are a key component of good preventive care. Many medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or obesity are common in aging pets and much easier to manage when detected in the early stages. Veterinary visits are also the perfect time to ask for advice, update your pet’s food, or get an expert opinion on any behavioral issues that may be affecting your bonding with your pet.

  8. Teach an Old Dog a New Trick

Studies show that mental stimulation can help reduce cognitive deterioration in aging animals. In other words, keeping your dog’s brain active can actually make them healthier! Teaching your pup new tricks and practicing those they already know are a great way to keep their minds healthy.

  9. Update Pet ID Info

Over the course of a year, a lot can change — people move, get new phone numbers, and forget to update their dog’s tags. Often, they only remember once the pet is lost. If any of your contact information has changed in 2019, don’t wait — update their tags and microchip information today. It’s the best way to ensure a lost pet makes their way safely home.

  10. Consider Fostering

Are you interested in added a new pet to your pack, but you’re not 100% sure? Or just want to make a difference in the lives of dogs? Try fostering. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations need loving homes to provide safe and temporary living arrangements for pets. Hosting a furry friend is the perfect way to test the waters with a new dog without the full commitment. Most local rescues are constantly looking for volunteers to foster animals as they search for their forever homes.
