A Dog Appreciation Post

If there’s one thing we can agree upon, it’s that 2020 hasn’t gone as expected. Through all of the ups and downs, there’s still so much to be grateful for!

Many of us have spent weeks or months cooped up in our homes, separated from friends and family, but the silver lining is the extra time we’ve had with our pups. Dogs are truly the best quarantine companion you could ask for. They can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health.

We’re so thankful for our pups – they do so much for us! Studies have shown that petting a dog can lead to lower blood pressure, an increase in the oxytocin hormone and a decrease in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Having a dog can even help you live longer! A study of more than 3 million participants found that dog parents had a 24% risk reduction for death from any cause.

Our pups remind us daily to enjoy the simple things in life, the value of a positive attitude and enthusiastic hellos, the thrill of exploration, the importance of playing hard and resting well, that loyalty is a virtue and to always protect those you love.

In this season of gratitude, here are some ways to thank your pup (and pups everywhere) for the boundless love and joy they bring:

Keep Your Dog Clean and Healthy!

Routine care is critical to the overall wellness of every dog. Whether they just need the “Escentials” (bathing, ear cleaning, nail clipping, teeth brushing) or extra services like brush-outs or a haircut – make sure you stay on schedule to keep them clean, comfortable and healthy!

Get a Check-Up On Your Calendar

Even if you keep a super close eye on your dog's health, it’s important to book an annual appointment with your vet for a check-up. Regular visits will ensure your pup's vaccinations are up to date, help you keep an eye on their weight and can put your mind at ease about any issues.

Make a Food Donation

This November, Scenthound is teaming up with Peggy Adams Animal Shelter to hold a pet food drive. Peggy’s Pantry helps families feed their pets and refers low-cost vet care. They typically feed 400-500 pets each month, but this year the need is even greater. Bring a dog food donation to any Scenthound location during November and ask for a free facial scrub for your pup!

Volunteer

There are always opportunities to volunteer within the dog community! Whether you’re walking dogs, cleaning, or doing administrative work, investing your time will help lovable pups find a new home.

Ask for Donations Instead of Holiday Gifts

When your friends and family ask what’s on your list this holiday season, remind them there’s no better gift than helping animals in need! Suggest giving donations to your local animal shelter instead of presents.

Spread the Word!

The easiest way to help any cause is simply sharing it with others. You may not have the time or ability to help, but you can always tell your friends or post on social media about different causes or fundraisers on behalf of our furry family.

2020's wild roller coaster ride has reawakened our appreciation for the canine-human bond. It’s undeniable – dogs are more than pets, they’re family! Dogs make us healthier and happier, and in return, we provide them with the love and care they deserve. That is the ultimate essence of family – sharing mutual unconditional love and affection – and that is truly something to be thankful for.
